How Far in Advance Should You Prep Your Hair for a Wedding or Big Event?

Why Hair Prep Matters More Than Most People Realize

At our Lincoln hair salon, one of the biggest things we’ve learned from bridal and event styling is this: great event hair usually starts long before the actual appointment.

Whether you’re getting married, attending a formal event, or preparing for photos, healthy hair photographs better, styles more easily, and holds shape longer throughout the day.

The best results don’t come from rushing at the last minute — they come from giving your hair time to adjust, strengthen, and settle into the look you want.

6 Months Before: Build the Foundation

If possible, we recommend starting your hair prep around six months before a wedding or major event.

This doesn’t mean doing dramatic changes. It simply gives you time to:

  • Improve hair health

  • Grow out damage or breakage

  • Adjust colour gradually

  • Create a realistic maintenance plan

This is also the perfect time to start focusing on healthy hair care routines that support long-term results rather than quick fixes.

3–4 Months Before: Refine Your Colour and Routine

Three to four months out is when we typically begin refining the overall look.

Colour Adjustments

This is a great time for:

  • Soft blonding adjustments

  • Lived-in colour refinement

  • Grey blending transitions

  • Tone and brightness corrections

Making changes gradually allows the colour to feel more natural and gives time for adjustments if needed.

Strengthening and Hydration

Healthy hair always styles better for events.

We often recommend lightweight strengthening products like Aveda Botanical Repair™ Strengthening Leave-In Treatment to improve softness and resilience without making the hair feel heavy.

Especially moving into warmer seasons, lighter products help maintain movement and longevity in styled hair.

1–2 Months Before: Focus on Scalp and Hair Health

This is where many people start noticing how their hair actually behaves day to day.

If your scalp feels dry, oily, irritated, or congested, now is a great time to support it with a HeadSpa for scalp health and circulation or a gentle spring scalp detox.

Healthy scalp conditions help:

  • Improve overall hair appearance

  • Support smoother styling

  • Reduce buildup before event styling

This is also the time to finalize your maintenance plan leading into the event.

2–3 Weeks Before: Keep Things Consistent

Avoid making dramatic hair decisions right before your event.

This usually isn’t the time for:

  • Major colour corrections

  • Big haircut changes

  • Trying entirely new products or tools

Instead, focus on consistency and maintaining the health you’ve already built.

If your hair still feels heavy or difficult to style, it may simply be stuck in winter mode, which often improves with lighter routines and breathable products.

The Week of Your Event

In the final week:

  • Stay hydrated

  • Avoid over-washing

  • Keep heat styling minimal

  • Follow the plan discussed with your stylist

We also recommend using lightweight finishing products that support movement and softness without buildup, such as:

  • Aveda Air Control™ Light Hold Hair Spray

  • Aveda Nutriplenish™ Leave-In Conditioner

These products help hair remain touchable, polished, and easier to work with during styling.

Event Hair Should Still Feel Like You

One of the most important parts of wedding or event hair prep is creating a look that still feels natural and comfortable for you.

At Hair Creations in Lincoln, Ontario, we focus on building healthy, manageable hair first so that your final style feels effortless, soft, and long-lasting — not overworked or overly stiff.

The earlier you begin preparing, the more relaxed and confident the process becomes.
